Joseph F. Buell, MD, FACS

Following his residency, Dr. Buell undertook a transplantation fellowship at the University of Chicago, specializing in adult and pediatric kidney, pancreas, and liver transplantation. He acquired additional training in the area of surgical oncology while at the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health, Surgery Branch. While there, he worked closely with Dr. Steven Rosenberg investigating regional hyperthermic chemotherapeutic perfusion therapy for peritoneal carcinomatosis, isolated hepatic malignancies, and other malignancies. Dr. Buell brings expansive knowledge as a surgical oncologist and as a transplant surgeon to the IPITTR. In addition to being board-certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Buell is a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and American Society of Transplant Physicians. He received the Young Investigator Award for Transplant 2000, and has mentored two Young Investigator Award for Transplant 2001 recipients (one of the award recipients, Dr. Jennifer Trofe, also serves on the IPITTR board of directors). Dr. Buell's clinical research interests include the role of liver transplantation in primary and secondary malignancies, immunosuppression modification in management of malignancies, the role of immunosuppressive agents in denovo malignancies, and the identification of donor-related factors that lead transmission of donor-derived malignancies. |
